Cuban Picadillo

Serves 4 People

Picadillo is a favourite in Latin American countries and in this Cuban version uses olives and raisins. Great, interesting comfort food that is easy to make, it can be served with rice or in tacos or tortillas.


450g minced beef
1 tablespoon oil
1 large onion, chopped finely
3 garlic cloves – minced
500ml tomato passata
100g raisins
30g green olives (stoned)
2 green chilies, chopped
finely and deseeded
Teaspoon dried oregano
Salt & ground black pepper


1.Heat the oil in a frying pan and add the onion and garlic and cook on medium heat for 5 minutes until they soften

2. Add the minced beef and stir until browned

3) Add the passata, raisins, olives, and chilies, and stir. Add the oregano, salt, and pepper.

4) Bring to the boil, then reduce the heat to low and simmer for 30 minutes, until the beef is cooked through.

5) Serve immediately with boiled rice or as a filling in tortillas or taco shells.
